PacSun is an abbreviation for Pacific Sunwear of California, LLC. It is the United States-based retail clothing brand that offers California-inspired clothing, footwear, and accessories with a focus on teens and young adults.
As of June 2020, it has 400 retail stores, but the numbers have been declining in the past few years. It is now owned by the American private equity firm Golden Gate Capital that has its headquarters in San Francisco, California.
History of PacSun
PacSun is founded by Jack Hopkins and Tom Moore that has its humble beginnings in a surf shop in Seal Beach, California. The business initially sold items from known surf brands when it opened in September 1982, then later sold street and skatewear brands.
The company went public in March 1993. Having over a thousand retail stores, they also decided to open an urban apparel chain d.e.m.o. in 2000. But all of their retail stores are closed in 2008, with the reason to focus more on their original PacSun stores.
One of the known collaborations of the brand was in 2012, with Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner to produce their own product line. PacSun filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2016 and reorganized with Golden Gate Capital in a debt-for-equity restructuring deal, emerging as a privately held firm.
There were 593 stores open at the time of the bankruptcy filing, with no intentions to shut any of them. PacSun then merged with Eddie Bauer (also owned by Golden Gate) to form PSEB. The CEO and President of Eddie Bauer, Mike Egeck, also became the CEO of PSEB.
As of writing, the company serves its customers with its retail stores in the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada while its online stores can offer international shipping.
